Bio

Apichaya Bunyatratchata (Garn) is currently an Assistant Professor at Mahasarakham University in Thailand where she runs her own lab. She completed her Ph.D. in the Food Science department at UC Davis in the Barile Lab and wrote her dissertation entitled "Prebiotics in early life nutrition: a qualitative and quantitative investigation of gut microbiome-promoting compounds in liquid formulations for infants and calves.” Prior to pursuing her Ph.D. at Davis, Garn attended University of Massachusetts Amherst (UMass Amherst) where she completed a double major: B.S. in Food Science and B.A. in Chemistry and received the degree with honors of both Summa Cum Laude and Commonwealth Honor College Scholar with the greatest distinction. At UC Davis, Garn joined Dr. Daniela Barile’s lab. Her work focuses on understanding the effect of bioactive milk compounds, including oligosaccharides and glycoproteins, on health benefits. She uses advanced mass spectrometry as a tool to reveal glycans’ structures and their interaction with the gut microbiota.
